Dionay Chapter 7, Part 2

Vil closed the door to his private rooms and watched as Dionay sat on the couch with Miki and Alixy on either side. His shoulders slumped and he looked miserable. Confused, since he thought what Dionay had accomplished was cause for celebration, he knelt before his slave.

“What’s wrong?”

Dionay looked at him, shook his head, and stared at the far wall. Alixy glared at Vil.

“He feels bad.”

“Are you ill, Dionay?”

This earned him another glare, so Vil backed away to find a seat on a chair across from the couch. To say he was confused was an understatement, but these were his slaves and if he wanted to know what was wrong, he had every right.

“You need to talk to me,” he finally said, quite proud of the firm tone he used.

Miki shared an uneasy look with Alixy. No, that wasn’t right. He didn’t want to scare them. Vil sighed and rubbed a hand over his face.

“I know I’m not experienced with having my own slaves, but I’ve watched my sister’s with theirs. Not their sex slaves, because only Jai has ever had any and she kept them in her rooms,” he rushed to clarify. “I do know when I ask a question, though, you’re supposed to answer.”

Since that earned him another glare from Alixy, Vil threw his hands up and huffed.

“Oh sure, now that Chi’s slaves are behaving, mine have to start being difficult.” Vil stood and paced the room. “I knew I shouldn’t have gone along with Jai. I knew better, you know. I wasn’t the one who wanted sex slaves! I didn’t need them! I have friends who are willing to engage in a little fun!”

The more Vil paced the angrier he got. He hadn’t realized he was yelling until his sister, Jai, slammed into his room.

“Vil! What are you screaming about? I could hear you all the way down the hall. That’s no way for a young man of the Eversea House to behave. You sound like a common street worker!”

Vil hung his head in embarrassment at the rebuke, but Jai apparently wasn’t finished.

“I can just as easily call the driver for your slaves as I could for Chi’s. I won’t have disrespect in this house.” She stared hard at Dionay, Miki and Alixy. “I want to be clear that although I purchased you for Vil, you belong to me. Vil might be lenient with you, but I most certainly will not be!”

Miki stared at Jai, clearly terrified as he clung to Dionay and Alixy. Dionay looked from Vil to Jai and disentangled himself from the others. He knelt before Jai.

“It’s my fault, Mistress. I was upset with what I said to Shai and Jora. Only punish me. Please? Don’t punish Miki, Alixy, or our master. Please?”

Jai stared down at Dionay with her mouth open, before snapping it shut and clearing her throat.

“You are slaves of Eversea House, which is one of the highest ranking families in this region. There are expectations in return for the privilege of belonging to an Eversea. One of those expectations is obeying your master without question. I realize you are new to this world, which is why I’m willing to make an allowance. Once. No more!”

“Yes, Mistress. I understand. Thank you.”

“Now that you know the rules. I expect better of you… Dionay, is it?”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Jai turned to Vil, “Vil, I’d like to see you in my office before the mid-day meal. Deal with your slaves and meet me, please.”

“Of course, Jai. I beg your pardon for raising my voice. It was inexcusable and I do appreciate the slaves you’ve provided for me.”

Jai nodded once and left, shutting the door firmly behind her.

“I’m sorry, Master,” Dionay said, still kneeling. “I wasn’t trying to ignore you, I just wasn’t sure how to explain why I felt so awful.”

Vil sat down again and motioned for Dionay to get off the floor. “Can you tell me, now?”

“I… I persuaded them to accept slavery.” Dionay resumed sitting on the couch between Miki and Alixy.

“Yes?”

“I lied to them.”

“Did you?”

“Yes, I did. Even if I had good intentions, it was still a lie.”

“Are you so sure of that?” Vil sighed and motioned for Dionay to sit on his lap, so he could hold and reassure him. “We don’t have a true organized religion on our world. There are a few pockets here and there who believe in some kind of higher power, but there is no official faith or anything like that on Gatoli. Who’s to say we’re right or wrong? Who says there isn’t a god or goddess, or both, that watches over us? I realize Ojadiola wasn’t a goddess, but maybe some higher power did step in and save you from death. I certainly don’t know, but isn’t it possible? I think what you did was save Shai and Jora. I know Chi will treat them well, unlike some I’ve seen with their slaves. She’ll buy them fancy clothes and jewels, make sure they have live in comfort, and spoil them with luxury I don’t think any of you have ever known. All they have to do is please her. It’s not a bad life, do you think?”

“No, Master. It’s not a bad life, but I feel dishonest.”

“In here, you can call me by my name. In fact, I’d prefer it if you did.” Vil stroked a comforting hand down Dionay’s back.” Even if you didn’t believe what you were telling them, don’t you think the end result was worth it? Don’t you think they’ll be happy?”

Dionay bit his bottom lip and nodded.

“Then don’t worry so much about the means. I feel you did what you had to do to get through to them.”

Dionay, Chapter 7, Part 1

Vil settled himself on one of his sister’s luxurious upholstered couches and tossed three richly embroidered cushions on the floor at his feet for Dionay, Miki and Alixy to sit on. He couldn’t hold back his delighted smile when all three sank gracefully onto their cushions as if they’d been trained to do so from birth. He couldn’t be more pleased with his new slaves and he’d have to remember to let Jai know she’d been right. That would make her happy, he was sure.

He was curious, now, to hear what Dionay was going to say. Knowing, now, that Jora always argued with Dionay, he wasn’t going to hold out much hope his slave could help. He looked up when Chi brought her two slaves into the room. Jora’s face was set in mutinous lines and he noted Chi was using the leashes to direct both Jora and Shai. Jora glared when Chi pushed him onto a cushion, but Shai seemed to be in some world all his own. Jai entered the room and sat in one of the overstuffed arm chairs off to the side.

“Let’s get this over with, shall we? If I need to make a run back to the slave markets, I don’t want to be out too late. I’ve got more important things to do.” Jai frowned at Shai. “Are you sure he’s not drugged, Chi?”

“My scanner says no.” Chi shrugged. “Unless it’s a substance the scanner doesn’t recognize.”

Dionay glanced up at him, as if asking permission to speak. Vil breathed a sigh of relief that he was willing to act like a proper slave. He’d been worried he was being too lenient.

“Go ahead, Dionay. You can speak.”

“Thank you, Master. He’s not drugged, Mistress. Shai has always been like this. He believes this is how the Goddess wants him to be.”

“How incredibly bizarre.” Jai scratched her chin. “Well, go ahead then. Let’s see if they’ll listen to you.”

Dionay ducked his head, but suddenly looked back up at Jora.

“What are you doing, Jora? Why are you and Shai acting like this?”

“Don’t be stupid, Dionay!” Jora snarled, glaring at Chi when she jerked his leash.

“I don’t get it.” Dionay sighed and shook his head. “The Goddess granted us continued life, brought us to a place where we’re treated better than we’ve ever been, and you guys are sulking.”

Shai jerked out of his foggy state and focused on Dionay. “What?”

“You know, Shai, Miki and I both prayed so hard before we were to be put on the altar. We prayed for the Goddess to spare us. To really come down this time and take us. And our prayers were answered.”

“Answered?” Jora looked incredulous. “Answered! We were attacked by those hairy beasts! The High Priestess was killed and the temple was destroyed! You call that an answered prayer?”

“It was like the sacred books said” Miki whispered. “Just like it.”

He shot a look up at Vil and bit his lip.

“Go ahead, Miki. It’s okay to talk to the other slaves.

“It was just like the old writings, you know? The bright lights and everything. And we were taken away into the sky and now we’re living in a paradise.”

“You can’t be serious!”

Jora jumped off the cushion as if he were about to attack Miki, but Chi pulled on his leash until he sat down. Dionay frowned and glanced up at Vil before turning back to Jora.

“He is and so am I. We have nice clothes, plenty of food to eat, a beautiful home to live in, and a kind master. It was an answer to our prayers.”

“But they killed our High Priestess!” Jora screamed, outraged.

“I think I’ve heard enough,” Jai stood up. “I’ll call down for the driver.”

“Who wasn’t following what the old sacred texts said!” Dionay cried out, looking desperately at Vil.

“Let Dionay finish. Please, Jai?” Vil interceded.

Jai glared, pointing a stern finger at Jora. “You will sit quietly and listen.”

Vil nodded at Dionay to continue.

“The Dark Goddess never asked for dead sacrifices. She asked for live ones. I read the texts, too, you know. I remember what the old texts said. She asked for five innocent, ALIVE, young males. She promised to return every four years when the moons aligned and our world went dark. She never asked for anyone to be killed.”

“But she stopped coming,” Shai said. “That’s why they built the altar.”

“The Goddess never asked for any deaths, though, did she, Shai?” Alixy joined the conversation. “Dionay is right. Everything that happened was just like the old texts stated. The only reason the High Priestess was killed and the temple was destroyed was because they’d profaned the Goddess’ words.”

“The way I see it,” Dionay continued to speak. “You two are sitting here telling the Goddess that because this wasn’t what you expected, you’re not going to accept it. Did you ever happen to think if you throw a goddess’s gifts back in her face, she’ll just take them away and give them to someone else? Your mistress is ready to send you back to the slave markets. You’re of no use to her if you’re unwilling to accept her.”

“That’s… that’s…”

“Do you really think so, Dionay?” Shai interrupted Jora’s sputtering. “This is what Goddess Ojadiola wants for us?”

“This is what happened, isn’t it, Shai? Did they come in a blaze of lights and take us up to the heavens? Are we not living in splendor?”

Shai looked at Jora who seemed ready to explode. He surprised Vil, when he crawled closer to Chi and grabbed her hand, kneeling before her.

“I’m so sorry, Mistress. I’ll do what you want. I didn’t realize I was ignoring the Goddess’ gifts to me. Please don’t send me away.”

“Shai! What are you doing?” Jora hissed.

“I’m not going to throw my gift away, Jora! I’m not! You can be mad if you want, but I’m going to be thankful for the gifts the goddess has bestowed on me.”

Jora seemed to shrink in on himself. He looked from Shai to Miki to Alixy and finally to Dionay. Dionay nodded at him.

“You don’t want to go back to the slave markets, Jora. Truly. What if you’re sold to someone who beats you and hurts you or even kills you? All because you didn’t accept what can only be a gift from our Goddess.”

“You don’t even believe in her, Dionay.”

Jora sounded unsure, though. At least he was no longer ready to explode in anger.

“I don’t, no. I don’t believe Ojadiola was a goddess, but I never said there weren’t any goddesses or gods. Look. Even I can see how everything that happened was a good thing. Do you think any future priestesses will kill other sacrifices?”

“Probably not.” Jora shrugged and bit his lip before looking over to Chi. “I don’t want to go back to the slave market. I’ll do what you want.”

“Are we good here, then?” Jai stood up. “Am I making a trip to the slave markets or not?”

“I think I’ll give them another chance, Jai,” Chi said. “But if you two don’t do as I say, I’ll send you back without a second thought. I have no need of sex slaves who won’t perform and constantly ignore me.”

“That’s settled then and I have things to do.” Jai nodded briskly and headed for the door.

“If you’ll excuse me, Chi, I’m going to take my slaves back to my rooms.”

Chi offered an indifferent wave, disappearing into her inner rooms with both Shai and Jora in tow. Vil snorted in amusement and directed his slaves to follow him. He hoped Shai and Jora enjoyed what his sister had in store for them. Then he shuddered at the images popping into his head. That was… ugh. No, he didn’t want to think about either of his siblings and sex.

Dionay slowly came awake and stretched; only to find himself, once again, in the midst of a warm pile of limbs. He heard a chuckle from across the room and opened one eye. Vil leaned against the door frame, grinning.

“You guys are too cute, but it’s time to get up. Breakfast is here.”

Dionay squirmed until he was free of Alixy and Miki’s cuddling, grumbling to himself.

“I don’t know why you guys think I need to be cuddled like that. It’s like trying to sleep in a heater.”

“’Cause you’re safe, Dionay,” Miki mumbled, sleepily.

“What? How did you come to that conclusion?”

“You are,” Alixy said, sitting up. “Back at the monastery none of the bigger boys would bother you or anyone around you. And when the Cretonians attacked, you tried to defend us. You even had a sword.”

“So, I was stupid.” Dionay huffed. “You saw Gror take the sword away. That thing was so heavy I could barely lift it with both hands and he just took it away and threw it like it was nothing.”

“But you tried.” Miki asserted. “You got us all under the altar so we wouldn’t be hurt. Even Jora and Shai, who were just going to lay up there and get blasted.”

“Yeah, and at the slave market, you stood up for Miki and wouldn’t let anyone yell at him or push him around just because he was afraid.”

“What was I supposed to do? Miki is smaller and some of those other slaves and the dealers were mean.”

“That’s what we’re saying, Dionay.” Alixy huffed a laugh. “You always stick up for us. You protect us. You’re safe.”

“Oh, stop it.” Dionay grumbled when Alixy and Miki put their arms around him and just held him.

“Hey, I called breakfast, what are you guys do…” Vil stepped into the bedroom, stopped and grinned. “Oh, well, I guess breakfast can wait if everyone wants to play.”

“They’re just being all touchy today.” Dionay shrugged them off, stood up and looked around for his pants.

“Dionay’s embarrassed because we think he’s safe.” Miki giggled, heading for their room.

“Safe, huh?” Vil was still grinning as if he thought the whole thing was funny.

“Yes, he watches out for us, Vil.” Alixy defiantly crossed his arms over his chest. “He protects us. He always has.”

“Okay, okay.” Vil held his hands up as if in surrender. “I wasn’t saying you were wrong. Go get dressed so we can eat.”

“Where are my pants?” Dionay asked in frustration.

“I picked them up and put them in the clothing refresher so the house slaves didn’t need to come in here while you slept,” Vil responded. “You have clean clothing in your room. Hurry up and get dressed because I need to talk to you while we eat.”

Dionay rushed after the other two so he wasn’t just standing there naked. Not wanting to upset Vil, since he seemed to be in a good mood this morning, all three quickly found clean pants and donned them. Dionay didn’t think Vil had the temperament to be angry or mean, but they’d only known him one day, so he wasn’t going to take a chance at finding out.

Vil was sitting in one of the upholstered chairs, leaning back with his eyes closed. Dionay motioned for the others to be quiet and let him sleep. As silently as they could, they sat on the sofa.

“You should eat,” Vil said without opening his eyes.

“We thought you were asleep.”

“There’s fruit, bread, juice, and embryos.”

Dionay, Miki and Alixy looked at each other. Miki rubbed at his translator and winced.

“Don’t do that.” Vil opened his eyes. “The translators are sensitive so if you rub at them too hard the sound produced will hurt. What word confused you?”

“Embryos,” Dionay responded. “Isn’t that… Babies inside a womb?”

“Oh, no, that’s not… ew! Really? That’s what it translated? Well, technically, I guess that’s what they are, but that’s not… Just… Okay, don’t eat them. I don’t think I want to eat them, now, either.”

Vil walked over to the table and poked at a congealed, yellow mass, then sighed.

“That used to be my favorite.” He grumbled. “At least I like fruit. You guys are going to make it hard to enjoy eating anything.”

Once everyone had their plates filled and sat down, Vil began tapping a finger against his leg. Dionay paused his eating and watched that nervous finger for several moments before finally looking up to meet Vil’s eyes.

“Chi is having problems with Shai and Jora.”

“That’s not a surprise,” Dionay responded and shrugged.

“I got Jai’s permission to talk to you about helping her out.”

“What do you think I can do?”

“They look up to you.”

“No, they don’t.”

“Miki and Alixy do.”

“That’s Miki and Alixy, and I still think they’re silly for doing so. Jora and Shai are different.”

“So you won’t help?”

“I didn’t say that. I just don’t know what you think I can do.”

“Talk to them?”

Dionay sighed and put the piece of green fruit back on his plate. “Jora and Shai won’t listen to me. They know I don’t believe in all the goddess doctrine we were force fed at the monastery. They did. They believed it all. They really thought there was a grand purpose in laying on that altar and letting the High Priestess stab them in the heart.”

“Even after they were told who Ojadiola really was?”

“Yes. What would you want me to say, anyway?”

“Chi requires obedience, Dionay. She may not be the head of the family, but she’s still second in line until Jai has a daughter of her own, and a powerful female in her own right. She won’t put up with the way they’re acting.”

“You want me to talk them into accepting their slavery?”

“Yes. They need to be happy with Chi.”

“I don’t know what to say.” Dionay shuddered. “Slavery wasn’t allowed on our world. Why would I want them to be okay with it? I’m not okay with it.”

“Are you three truly unhappy here?”

“No! I mean, not really. This beats being dead and you take care of us and treat us well. I would rather not be a slave, but looking at the alternative, I can handle this.”

Vil ran a hand over his face and stood up to pace the room.

“Chi and Jai are talking about returning them to the slave markets and reselling them because Shai sits around in a daze looking like he’s taken some kind of drug and Jora won’t stop being angry. Another owner may not be so gentle with them. When it comes to sex, I refuse to force you. I feel a gentler approach is better, but it’s perfectly acceptable for an owner to do whatever she wants. They’re slaves, after all, and have fewer rights than I do. Chi could actually kill Shai and Jora, and no one would think she was wrong because slaves are property.”

“You could try, Dionay,” Alixy said. “Just try talking to them one more time.”

“Alixy, you know how they are. Jora is going to start screaming I’m a blasphemer again and Shai is going to act like I’m a child who just doesn’t understand the miraculous ways of the Goddess.”

“Who says this isn’t what the Goddess had planned for us?” Miki asked, timidly. “I know, now, Ojadiola wasn’t a real goddess, but what if there is a real god or goddess out there and this was their way of saving us. You said you prayed at the altar and asked not to be sacrificed and I did, too. Maybe this was the answer.”

Dionay blinked and stared at Miki. He’d not thought of it in quite that perspective. He wasn’t sure he really believed in gods and goddesses. Could he convince Jora, though? Shai would probably go for it, but Jora? Did Dionay even want to? There was just so much wrong with persuading either of them that being a slave was the best thing for them. Even if, right now, it was.

“You truly think so, Miki?”

“I don’t know for sure, but we did pray and we got an answer. Maybe not the answer we were expecting, but we’re not dead, are we?”

Dionay considered Miki’s words, an idea forming in his head. Possibly. It was worth a shot to keep Jora and Shai from ending up with someone who would hurt or even kill them. His own feelings about them aside, he didn’t want them to be harmed.

“Okay, I’ll talk to them, but I make no promises.”

“Good!” Vil looked relieved. “You wait here and I’ll tell Chi.”

Vil set his half empty plate aside and left the room.

“He’s nothing like what I would expect a slave owner to be,” Alixy observed.

“What were you expecting, Alixy? I don’t think this situation is within any of our experiences.”

“I’m not sure, Dionay, but nothing we’ve undergone since we were taken was what I thought would happen to us. I mean, after watching the Cretonians kill the priestess and ransack the monastery, the last thing I expected was for them to treat us nice. They sold us as slaves, sure, but they found us an owner that talks to us as if we’re his friends. We live in a huge house in the trees, Vil makes sure the food we get is something we like, and we have clothes and stuff that are nicer than anything we ever had at the monastery.”

“Lots better than dying, huh, Alixy?” Dionay teased.

“It’s lots better than the life we had at the monastery,” Miki responded with a touch of uncharacteristic asperity. “Sometimes, I wonder if we’re dreaming and we’ll wake up and still be back there waiting our turn to be put on the altar.”

Dionay reached over and pinched Miki on the leg.

“Ouch! What was that for?”

“Just thought I’d make sure you were awake.”

“Idiot.” Miki giggled.

“Let’s go, Dionay,” Vil said, reentering the room.

“I’d like to go, too, Vil,” Alixy, said.

“I didn’t ask if all of you could come, Alixy. Jai might get upset.”

“Jora and Shai might react better if we’re all there.” Miki chimed in. “Jora gets upset with Dionay easily.”

Vil chewed on his bottom lip, looking undecided.

“They won’t do anything wrong.” Dionay promised. “And Miki has a point. Jora and I have argued many times. He might be more inclined to listen if they’re with me.”

“Okay, but if Jai doesn’t like it, Miki and Alixy have to come back here.”

Vil turned away, but paused and faced them once more.

“Out there, you need to call me Master. Don’t use my given name and you need to refer to Chi or Jai as Mistress, okay? I’m not going to use your leashes since we’re not leaving the house, but you have to stay with me. Walk a step or two behind me and no wandering off. Do exactly what I tell you if I give you an order, okay?”

Dionay nodded, glancing over to see Miki and Alixy doing the same.

“This is part of that perception thing I was telling you about. Slaves would never use a Master’s given name because it would be too familiar.”

“What if I want to talk to Jai and not Chi? How do they know who I’m talking to?”

Vil chuckled. “You just had to throw that out there? You won’t be talking to either of them unless they speak to you first. You only need to answer their questions. Remember to be silent unless spoken to or given permission to speak.”

Vil motioned for them to follow him out the door. Dionay felt Miki grab his hand and squeezed it in reassurance. Vil led them down several corridors, through a couple of large rooms and finally stopped in front of a door.

Dionay held back for a moment, addressing Miki and Alixy. “Follow my lead in there, okay? Don’t think I really believe everything I say. Just agree with me.”

Miki giggled and nodded. “Are you going to spin a story, Dionay?”

“Kind of. Just don’t disagree with me, okay?”

Vil looked back at them and raised a brow. When Dionay didn’t say anything else, he pushed the door open.

Favorite February Reads – 2018

Quite a bit of my February was spent on rereads, so I’m not including them in this post. Sometimes you just need an old favorite to pick your spirits up.

vampireVampire Protection by Julia Talbot

Somehow, I missed this book when I made up my January list of favorite reads. Chalk it up to illness or whatever, but I can’t let this book go by without singing it’s praises. I love this entire series written by B.A. Tortuga, Kiernan Kelly, and Julia Talbot. The stories are loosely associated, within the same universe. This book? Oh man! I more than loved it! A vampire in trouble and a bear shifter assigned as protection detail. There’s some angst, some fun, some hot and sweaty sex, and a whole lot of enjoyment packed in this novella. I not only recommend this book, I think you should read the entire series.

daddy dateDaddy Needs a Date by Sean Michael

I love stories about gay men with families, and Sean Michael really does this trope so well. In the same vein as her Mannies, Inc. series, this book is about a dad with four girls. A teenage daughter who decides to get grandma’s help to find her dad his perfect someone makes for a really good, filled with fun and angst, story. I highly recommend this book.

38712208Demons Don’t Duel by Hannah Walker

Wow! Just, wow! This book had my heart racing before I even got out of the prologue. Fast paced, edge of your seat, adventure with just a touch of romance between two very alpha demons. I’ve loved just about every book I’ve read by this author and Demons Don’t Duel did not disappoint. Of course, all the great characters she’d already introduced in previous books of the Demonic Tales series are present and just as engaging as they’ve always been. I can’t recommend this book enough. I couldn’t put it down and pulled an “all-nighter” just so I could see what happened. And the ending? No spoilers, but Wow! Just, wow!
